They Feed Us Lies From the Tablecloth

With this week being the anniversary of System of a Down's fantastic self-titled debut album, we admittedly went down a bit of a SOAD content rabbit hole.
As we slid deeper and deeper into the clutches of that pesky YouTube algorithm, we were reminded of another pretty interesting moment in the band's career- the time that guitarist/vocalist Daron Malakian made a bit of an oopsies and screamed "FUCK YOU" (or possibly, "FUCK YEAH"?) to literally millions of American households during a live performance on NBC's Saturday Night Live.
The year was 2005, the album was Mezmerize, and the band were doing the rounds on the 'ol press & media circuit. As part of that press cycle, they were booked for Saturday Night Live.
Considering the song lyrics (referenced below), it's a bit of a wonder that the band was able to convince the producers and network to perform the song at all.
According to an interview with System of a Down bassist, Shavo Odadjian, the band somehow worked out an agreement with the show producers that they would bleep out each "fuck" in the song. They did a somewhat decent job accomplishing this as you can see below. That is, until, Daron went rogue with a massive, super audible "FUCK YOU/YEAH" at the end. Apparently, 50% of all TV viewers go this uncensored version blaring through their TV's. Love it.
Shavo claims that Daron just got a bit carried away and that the incident wasn't intentional. Not sure we buy it but you can watch the clip for yourself below. If you want to watch the whole entire SNL performance, head HERE.
